A full-day combination of one of Crete’s best-known lagoons, a quieter protected beach landscape and a historic monastery above the Libyan Sea.

Why go
Three very different stops on one coast.
Elafonisi is the famous shallow lagoon and beach system; Kedrodasos is the wilder, less-built-up counterpart nearby; and Chrysoskalitissa adds a cultural stop before or after the beaches. Together they make a much more complete day than simply driving to Elafonisi and back.
History & character
More than a beach stop.
01
Chrysoskalitissa
The monastery stands on a rocky rise above the coast and is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin and the Holy Trinity. Local tradition gives it the famous “golden step” story; the present church took its modern form in the late 19th century, while the site’s religious tradition is older.
02
Elafonisi
Elafonisi is a protected coastal landscape where the shallow lagoon makes the peninsula appear island-like. Its pale sand, turquoise water and sensitive dune habitat are the reason to visit — and the reason to stay on established paths and treat the area carefully.
03
Kedrodasos
Kedrodasos is known for its open sand, rocky coves and juniper-covered landscape. It feels far less organised than Elafonisi, so it suits visitors who prefer a quieter beach and are comfortable bringing what they need with them.
What to do
A simple full-day plan.
Morning
Start at Chrysoskalitissa
Visit the monastery before the beach crowds build and enjoy the coastal view from the rock.
Midday
Swim at Elafonisi
Walk the lagoon area, swim and keep the day relaxed rather than trying to cover every corner.
Later
Finish at Kedrodasos
Use the quieter beach as the slower second half of the day before returning toward Paleochora.
GOOD TO KNOWThese are sensitive coastal environments.
Bring water, sun protection and anything you need for an unorganised beach stop. Do not drive or park on dunes, remove sand or shells, or damage the juniper vegetation.
